Sphaerosporella taiwania Y. Z. Wang, sp. nov. (Figs. 1, 2.)
Apothecia gregaria, sessilis, 1-5 mm diam., discus concavus, luteolus vel brunnescens cum annosus. Receptaculum subbrunneum, coopertum ad brevie brunneum pilis, ad marginatum imprimis. Pipi 1-3 septata, brunnea tunicata, 40-55 × 7-9 μm. Excipulum ectale textum globosum vel polygonium cellularis, 20-50 μm diam., stratum 150-200 μm crassum. Excipulum medullosae textum intricatum, 5-7 μm diam, stratum 50-150 μm crassum. Hymenium stratum luteolum, 240-260 μm crassum. Asci 8-spori, 4-6 spori raro, cylindricum, 150-185 × 14-19 μm, basis ad a crozier. Ascosporae uniseriatae, hyalinae, leaves, globosae, 10-13 μm. Paraphyses filiformes, septatae exigue, basis 2-3μm diam, vel apice leviter inflati, 4-6 μm diam. Anamorphosis Dichobotrys.
Holotypus: Taiwan, Taichung: National Museum of Natural Science, 18.V. 1999, WAN 663 (TNM).
Apothecia gregarious, sessile, 1-5 mm diam., disc concave, yellowish orange turning to brown when older. Receptacle pale brown, covered by short brown hairs, especially towards the margin, hairs 1-3 septate, brown walled, apex pointed, 40-55 × 7-9 μm. Ectal excipulum composed of globose to polygonal cells, 20-50 μm diam., layer 150-200 μm thick, medullary excipulum of textura intricata, layer 50-150 μm thick, hyphae loosely arranged, 5-7 μm wide. Hymenium layer yellowish, 240-260 μm thick. Asci 8-spored, occasionally 4-6-spored, cylindrical, 150-185 × 14-19 μm, with a crozier at base. Ascospores uniseriate, hyaline, smooth, globose, 10-13 μm diam, each with a large droplet, some appearing to be covered by a loose coating. Paraphyses filiform, base 2-3 μm, enlarged at tips to 4-6 μm wide, sparingly septate, filled with yellowish brown granules. Anamorph Dichobotrys.
The single-ascospore cultures were isolated from specimen WAN 832. Colonies on MEA medium spreading rapidly, reaching 9 cm diam. in 7 days at room temperature-Mycelium loose, floccose, white to yellowish brown; hyphae 6-8 μm diam, sparingly septate. Conidiophores erect, appearing after 2 weeks on CMA medium, conidia hyaline to light brown, globose to subglobose, 12-14 μm diam.

Etymology: Latinized from Taiwan; locality of the type collection.
This species is similar to S. brunnea by the small, yellowish-brown, hairy apothecia and globose ascospores but the latter usually grows on burnt ground, the apothecia are not brightly colored, and the ascospores are larger (13-16 μm in Rifai, 1968; 13.3-16.2 μm in Haffner, 1987). Sphaerosporella hinnulea also grows on soil, but has larger apothecia and ascospores (Rifai, 1968; Seaver, 1978). Yao and Spooner (1996) treated S. hinnulea as a synonym of S. brunnea. Korf (1972) has merged Sphaerosporella with Trichophaea, hence he will assign this species to Trichophaea (Korf, pers. comm.). Cain and Hastings (1956) isolated Sphaerospora minuta from sandy soil collected in a forest of Pinus banksiana. It also has brown, hairy apothecia with smooth, globose ascospores, that are 13-17 μm and a conidial state of Dichobotrys, and was transferred to Trichophaea by Korf (Hennebert, 1973). Since Sphaerosporella brunnea is capable of forming ectomycorrhizae with Pinus banksiana (Danielson, 1984), the relationships between S. taiwania and Pinus taiwanensis await for further studies.
