Phanerochaete leptoderma S.H. Wu, sp. nov. (Fig. 29)

Basidiocarpum effusum, pulverulentum vel subceraceum, 100-220 μm crassum; superficies hymenialis plana. Systema hypharum monomiticum; hyphae efibulatae, tenuitunicatae. Cystidia cylindrica vel subuliformia, incrustata, 35-65 × 4-6 μm. Basidia clavata vel subclavata, 21-28 × 4.7-6.0 μm, 4 sterigmatibus. Basidiosporae cylindricae, laeves, tenuitunicatae, (6.2-)6.4-7.6(-8.0) × 2.9-3.3, IKI-, CB-.

Holotypus. — Taiwan. Hsinchu: Kuanhsi Primeval Forest Park, 1000 m, on branch of angiosperm, 5.IV. 1988 Wu 880405-13 (TAI; isotypi: H, TNM).

Etymology. — From leptodermus (= thin-walled), referring to the thickness of the subicular hyphae.

Fruit body effused, adnate, pulverulent, subceraceous when old, 100-220 μm thick in section. Hymenial surface whidsh or Cream Color, no colour changes in KOH, smooth, sometimes slightly pilose due to projecting cystidia, rarely cracked; margin concolorous or paler, slightly arachnoid-filamentose.

Hyphal system monomitic; hyphae simple-septate. Subiculum uniform, composed of medullary layer, with compact or rather compact texture, 10-50 μm thick; hyphae horizontal, somewhat vertical near subhymenium, hyaline, rather distinct, straight,± agglutinated, 2.5-4.5 μm in diam, thin- or slightly thick-walled; subhymenium differentiated, with rather dense texture near subiculum, compact next to hymenium, thickening; hyphae ± vertical, hyaline, distinct or indistinct, sometimes slightly tortuous, 2-4 μm in diam, thin-walled, sometimes encrusted with a thin layer of crystals, anastomoses occasional. Cystidia variably abundant, immersed or projecting for approximately half their lengths, sometimes overlapping in thickening subhymenium, hyaline, cylindrical with narrower apices, apically obtuse or acute, apical halves encrusted with thin layer of crystals, which gradually dissolve in KOH, 35-65 × 4-6 μm (encrustation excluded), with 0.5-1.2 μm thick walls, adventitious septa occasionally occur. Basidia clavate or subclavate, 21-28 × 4.7-6.0 μm, 4-sterigmate. Basidiospores cylindrical, smooth, thin-walled, usually with several small oil-drops, (6.2-)6.4-7.6(-8.0) × 2.9-3.3 μm, IKI-, CB-.

Additional specimens examined. — Taiwan. Taipei: Sanhsia, 280 m, on branch of angiosperm, 9.IX.1988 Wu 880909-42 (H, TAI, TNM). Taitung: Taimali, 850 m, on twig, 19.V.1989 Wu 890519-9 (H, TAI, TNM).

Distribution. — Taiwan.

This species sometimes exhibits overlapping cystidia in its thickening subhymenium, a character shared with Phanerochaete laevis, from which it differs in having narrower and thinner-walled subicular hyphae, and longer but narrower basidiospores.
