The aforementioned skirts are worn in ceremonies today. The butan worn by young men still has its social significance in the growing up process. Wearers of wraparound short skirts have to exercise self-control and listen to their leaders.
Before the age of 13 girls would wear a short skirt, folded on the left side. At the fulafulayang period they would wear a longer skirt over the short one, which would be folded on the right side. When they walked they would reveal a part of the flowered inner skirt, presenting a pretty sight.
Older women wear the sugun over their three quarter length trousers. From Puyuma women's clothing and wearing method it is easy to tell their age.
