Introduction

Molybdenite is mainly composed of molybdenum and sulfur. It usually contains rhenium and selenium, and small amounts of gold and silver sometimes. It is of leaden color and low hardness. Complete cleavage on the underside is distinctive. Even though molybdenite is very similar to graphite in terms of their cleavage and hardness, it has a by far bigger specific gravity.Molybdenite, when on the Earth's surface, weathers into yellow Ferrimolybdite (Fe2(MnO4)3.8H2O), which is an important signal to molybdenum deposit.Molybdenite is the major source of molybdenum and rhenium.
