Introduction

It is of hexagonal crystal system, because in the unit cells some places of iron are not filled. The ratio of iron to sulfur is between 0.85 and 1; therefore, the chemical formula of pyrrhotite is Fe1-xS, in which x ranges from 0 to 0.2.Pyrrhotite is highly electricity-conductive and slightly magnetic. Its magnetism is partly due to its components (the more iron the lower magnetism) and partly due to the distribution of empty iron unit cells (the more regular, the higher the magnetism).Apart from extracting iron, pyrrhotite is used to extract sulfur for producing vitriol. The by-product of the process, selenium, is also of significance.
