What are mosses?

Mosses are small, multi-cellular plants that live most of their lives in dark and damp environments. They are spore-bearing with alternation of generations just like ferns. However, they have no vascular bundles or real roots and are quite different from ferns. The roots, or rhizoids, of mosses serve only to secure the plant and do not absorb nutrients.
