¡@¡@In terms of shape, smocks were mostly square shaped. The basic form was ? and without a collar. The smocks worn casually or for work were mainly collarless and would either have sleeves or be sleeveless, with buttons down the front and without buckles. The pearl smocks were shaped like ordinary smocks and were also decorated with buttons, small bells and shell money. Some were also made by sewing or stringing together shells and pearls.
¡@¡@Traditionally, the patterns of Atayal clothing were expressed using cross weaving. Apart from work clothes which were alb and non patterned, other clothes had had colored patterns formed by vertical and horizontal cross weaving§¨Â´ Some used vertical or horizontal sewing to make an inlaid or relief effect, making the garment more exquisite and varied. Red, white, black and blue thread was most often used. The most common patterns were squares, ¡§z¡¦, stripes, triangles and other geometrical shapes. The patterns would appear mainly on the lower part of the smock or on the back, with the patterns on the back usually more varied than on the front.
