Traditionally, bells were made by turning a metal plate inwards, like a piece of bamboo split in two. Through one end a leather strap was passed, onto which two strips of wood about six inches long and two inches wide were attached. Today, the two strips of wood have been replaced by shield-shaped wooden objects on which a human head is carved.
