臺灣現生蟹類的調查研究始於1902年，迄今紀錄600餘種，但台灣地層產短尾類化石的研究則始於1947年（林朝棨Ch’aoch’i Lin），迄今相關分類研究文獻共10篇，總計發表70屬164種螃蟹化石；另有更早期關於蟹類化石分布之報導2篇，總計12篇相關文獻：
