Lichens

Lichens are Pioneer Species in Pristine Ecosystems

Lichens are a very particular group of organisms. They are a composite life-form based on the symbiotic relationship between an alga and a fungus, and are often a pioneer species in pristine ecosystems. They come in a wide range of colors, vary greatly in shape and appearance and have unique internal structure. Lichens can be found on the surface of rocks, tree trunks, walls and in every corner nature. The color can be yellow to green, bright orange or red, white, grey, brown and even black as well as very often being mottled. The lichen thallus can be leaf like, or look like a plant stem, a cup or a bowl and can have serrated or otherwise decorated edges.
