Rattan hats were woven from rattan in a coiled fashion, with thin rattan strips used for the rim of the hat. The top of the hat would be the starting point of the process, which would extend until the hat was finished as one single whole. Rattan strips would be shaped using a knife to make them easier to bend. The technical name for this process is coiling and when used small tacks were often utilized to aid the overlapping of the strips. The coiling was achieved by using one strip as the core and another to tie all the other coiled strips together. The final work was then tidied up and worn with a hemp or cotton rope band.
