The Atayal short smock is called "ratang". Traditionally, the material, color,pattern and stitching method of the short smock was similar to the long Atayal smock, belonging to the square clothing system. The cloth used was mostly hessian. The short smocks had buttons down the front and were colarless. Everyday wear smocks would be unpatterned, while ceremonial wear smocks would be patterned.
Generally speaking, there were few restrictions on what clothes could be worn by Atayal men and women, however sleeveless short smocks were exclusively worn for ceremonies by men.Many other items could be worn by both sexes.Every item had its suitable venue and wearing method and wearing at an unsuitable place or in an unsuitable way would likely result in criticism of the wearer. |
